It contains sodium benzoate as preservative but had no idea that it reacts with vitamin c to give benzene and can cause cancer. Thanks to a reader who told me about this. I have read some articles on it have given the link below please go through that.

It says that most of the beverages contains sodium benzoate as preservative an they have Vitamin c too but sodium benzoate percentage should be within the safety levels. However the percentage of sodium benzoate is not mentioned on the bottle which makes it shocking. Please go through the comments section and the links given to know more about this preservative and it’s ill effects.

  1. I have used amla juice from patanjali and also from other manufacturers (Apollo Pharma, Med plus and others) I find that except Med Plus the amla juice from all other sources is of dark brown color. I prepare the juice at home when the fruit is available in season and it remains white when stored in the refrigerator for over a month. May be the preservative sodium benzoate gives the dark color.

    1. I have started using amla juice just a few months ago and Patanjali is the only brand I have used. Therefore I can’t comment on the color but before I used to eat amla or murabba to get the benefits (never extracted juice at home)but the amla juice is really handy and can be used everyday. I will try out other brands as well, thank you for the information.

    2. Don’t drink this crap…i bought a 500ml bottle of Patanjali Amla Juice …..and there was more Sodium Benzoate than real juice in the bottle..you could actually smell it..its gonna do you more harm than good..SO DON’T GO FOR IT. Its POISON ..Benzoate + Vitamin C(ascorbic acid) = Benzene!..do the math.

      1. What are you doing here man, I wonder how CIA has not hired you so far…a living chemistry lab. And, BTW, Benzoate + Vitamin C(ascorbic acid) = Benzene! is Chemistry…not math.

    1. Hi Naina,
I have seen people who has used amla since their childhood in any form like juice, murabba etc prevents premature or even delays hair graying. But most of us don’t like eating amla because it tastes sour and bitter.

  2. I am using Amla Juice ( of Patanjali )since last two months almost.
Usually I am taking 15 ml once in early morning with empty stomach.
Please let me know how many months continuously I can use Amla Juice??

    1. You can use Amala juice through out the year. If you want it to be effective for hair related problems use at least for 2-3 months.

  3. I have a 3 .6 yr boy can u tell me how amla juice will help him in cough and cold and what quatity he should be given.

    1. You can mix it with a little honey 3/4 tablespoon of amla juice and 1/4 of honey. The juice is sour so you can increase or decrease the juice and honey ration as per your liking and taste.

    1. This one has preservatives to increase its shelf life. I think you should try fresh amla juice for applying on scalp.

  4. I just got a bottle of Amla juice from Patanjali, on looking at the contents realised that they use “sodium benzoate” (preservative). i did lookup for the info on this and was shocked to learn that vitamin C reacts with sodium benzoate to give benzene. i am really concerned about this and considering to dispose off the juice. also i find it very irresponsible on the part of Patanjalli to use a preservative which reacts with Vit C.

    1. Hi Anushka, Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting. I haven’t seen any drastic change in texture of my hair or skin but drinking amla juice have reduced my hair fall problem. Taking amla juice daily have so many benefits if you can get fresh one go for that. Some days back Lohith had warned about the dangers of mixing Vitamin C and Sodium Benzoate. Which is a common preservative in juices and they both react with each other and gives out Benzene which is a cancer causing chemical. I researched and found out that it depends on the level of Sodium Benzonate in the juice. Patanjali people have not mentioned the percentage of the preservative used in the amla juice it so I would say try drinking fresh amla juice if available.

  8. Hi There, I have been drinking Patanjali Amla juice along with Aloevera juice for the past couple of months and I feel good (As far as skin, hair and immunity). Patanjali Ayruveda uses Sodium Benzoate as preservative, and I am a little worried about this preservative. I have read that most of the preservatives accelerates aging process. And thus Sodium Benzoate. Take a look at this link. http://foodbabe.com/2013/01/25/coca-colas-low-calorie-beverages-will-kill-you-before-they-solve-obesity/ . Mayo Clinic reports: The Mayo Clinic reported that this preservative may increase hyperactivity in children. Also, when sodium benzoate combines with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) benzene can form a carcinogen and kill DNA cells, and accelerate aging. Is this correct info…Please let us know..

    1. This is definitely a correct info. I’m a biotechnology student. And works in food corporation. Patanjali products are jot safe to use.

  21. I bought this juice but I am not able to finish it in a month so I have put it in the fridge after being opened.

Since the bottle says to consume it within a month; I am a little confused.

If you are drinking 3-5 teaspoons each day, there is NO way to finish this in a month. I have the big bottle obviously.

So, my Q is – is it OK to still consume it assuming it will still have its benefits?

    Thanks so much!!

  25. Frankly Patanjali amla juice was very good. But now with time and being more commercialized it is gradually becoming all chemical product. You can get the synthetic smell as you consume it .

  26. Hello,
First time, I purchased Patanjali Amla Juice today. I am surprised that there is no composition details given. Sodium benzoate is used as preservatives. Amla is reach source of vitamin C.Really, I surprised to read these lines at 3rd point:

“An unfortunate side effect is that when mixed with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) sodium benzoate transforms into benzene, a known carcinogen and DNA damager”.

    at this URL-http://blog.fooducate.com/2009/03/08/nine-facts-about-sodium-benzoate-a-preservative/

I am very much worried, should I use it or not.

  27. Hi,

I have been using Patanjali amla juice for the past one month and found it useful. However, I just came across this article and discovered that sodium benzoate and vitamin c causes cancer and i was hell scared. i looked up for it on the internet and found that only ascorbic acid on combination with sodium benzoate is carcinogenic. I also read a report stating that amla does not contain ascorbic acid. So i guess its safe to consume this product…thank goodness!!

    Thank you

    1. Hi,
I have myself consumed few bottles before a reader pointed out the ill effects of sodium benzoate. I stopped drinking that after some research on it and have come to the conclusion that it might not safe to drink. As I have already told I consumed a few bottles and I had no symptoms of any such complications or so related to this juice. I am a little scared and think the adverse effect might show up in the long run if I continue drinking this everyday. I love Patanjali products and would like to continue using them but not this one.

      1. Hi, this is 1st time i m visiting your page. I really liked it. I have a query, from 3 years i m taking lemon+honey water and from 1 week i have started taking PATANJALI AMLA JUICE empty stomach and after 10min. I drink Honey+lemon drink.

So, will there be any problem in future ? I m taking amla juice because of hair fall. And its off season so i cant find amla fruits in market.

  32. Thanks to your article. Disposing the bottle of Patanjali amla juice now because I don’t want any ill effects of sodium benzoate.

  33. Thanks for explaining abt amla juice benefits and sodium benzoate’s side effect.
So may i know which company’s amla juice is good?

  34. Hi,

I just started taking 30ml Amla juice from today, i feel pain in abdominal pain (stomach ache) and slight pain in my eye.

is it normal and shall i continue or should i stop consuming the Amla juice?

    Thanks in advance for replies,
    Sid

      1. what should be the safer level of preservative sodium benzoate that can be used in amla juice & do any other company other than patanjali have less amount of sodium benzoate used, which is in safer limit?

  35. I have been following the comments section and decided to clarify the same with PATANJALI and wrote a mail to them.

    Here is my mail
    ============
Recently I have purchased Amla juice from patanjali stores and started using it.

I came across an article stating like when sodium benzoate mixed with vitamin c, it turns to benzene which is a cancer carcinogenic agent.

To my knowledge, the same is applicable for Patanjali Amla juice as well which is quite alarming.

Please clarify so that the trust in your products may not be hampered.

    Here is their reply
    =============

    Om,
    Greetings of the day
At the outset we sincerely thank you for patronizing & supporting Patanjali Products and noted your inputs about Amla Juice.
Pl note that Amla Juice is manufactured by Patanjali Ayurved in state of the art GMP & ISO compliant plant under license from Ayush Department, Ministry of Health (Government of India) with an approved and 100% safe formulation. We are not adding synthetic Ascorbic acid in this product however has vitamin C in natural form. This fruit is a nature’s gift to mankind however all of us know that amla being a seasonal agricultural product is prone to spoilage and also not available throughout the year so some safe & scientific method needs to be developed to maintain its goodness & protection from spoilage and assure availability during off season. Our Scientists have developed this unique formation which is absolutely safe without any side effects and approved by Ministry of health as safe.
As far as reaction between Ascorbic Acid & Sodium Benzoate to produce carcinogens is concerned there is no scientific validation to support since data on level or degree of concentration of preservative, daily doses, consumption pattern, exposure time & duration etc (which leads to toxicity) is not available yet.
We do hereby reiterate that our product (Amla Juice) is a superior quality, wholesome product and absolutely safe to consume. We give 100% guarantee of the safety of Amla Juice. .
